HIS EXCELLENCY'S TRIBUTE TO THE WORK OF THE TUNG WAH INSTITUTION.

SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY NEEDED.

A fitting tribute to the great work accomplished by the Tung Wah Hospital, was made yesterday by His Excellency the Governor (Sir Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.) when he officially opened the new Eastern branch hospital at Sookunpog.

His Excellency referred to the happy co-operation between the Directors of the Hospital and the Hongkong Government, without which, he said, the task of the Government would be infinitely more difficult and the results of its activities much less satisfactory both to itself and the community at large.

The need of an adequate Endowment Fund was also urged by the Governor, who expressed the hope that both the Chinese and European communities would make special efforts in this direction.

At the conclusion of the ad- dresses, His Excellency was presented with a golden key with which he opened the main door.

able to claim the further historic parallel of the Tung Wah in the progress it will have made, and the good it will have done, to the community.

Before I proceed further I have an important and most welcome announcement to make, and it is that His Excellency the Governor has sent me a cheque for $1.000.00. as His Excellency's contribution to the funds of this Hospital. We value this donation, not only be- cause it is a substantial contribu- tion to the solution of this ques- tion, but also because it is further evidence of His Excellency's failing interest in, and support of,

Admiration of the splendid situation of the hospital was ex- pressed on all sides yesterday, when a very large crowd gather- ed in a huge matshed in the grounds for the opening ceremony. This was attended by leading mer- chants and business people, both European and Chinese, members. of the Councils, officials, and scores of Chinese residents.
